Jesus, the child refugee

imageYou probably know the story, the three Wise Men, possibly astrologers, seeing a star in the east and recognising it as indicating a significant birth, a new King. So they - we do not actually know how many or what gender - took gifts and set off on a journey to find this new King. Gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, each with a symbolic significance. Contrary to the impression often given, by the time they arrived Jesus and his parents were living in a house, not the stable. He may have been a toddler. Unfortunately they had called in at the palace to ask where to find the new king, well you would wouldn't you, but their arrival was a surprise and not good news for King Herod. So Joseph had to take Mary and young Jesus and flee to Egypt until a change of ruler made it safe to return to Galilee. So it was that they became refugees, arriving in a foreign land with few worldly goods. At least they had the gold.

Immanuel, God with us, not just arriving as a tiny baby but also starting out as a refugee. Been there, done that, got the T shirt. He knows what it is like to live in our world, your world and mine... and of refugees.
